The following Associated Press release has indicated that the Coby TF-dvd 1020, sold between May 2007 and July 2008 may pose a risk of fire if the battery overheats. Our Coby DVD players are not affected. We have published this notice as a convenience to you in case you have purchased one of these units. Here is a copy of the Associated Press Release:

By The Associated Press

(AP) - The following recalls have been announced:

About 13,000 rechargeable batteries sold with portable DVD/CD/MP3 players, manufactured in China and imported by Coby Electronics Corp., because they can overheat. This poses a risk of fires. The company has received four reports of overheated batteries, including three that resulted in minor property damage. The TF-DVD 1020 players containing the batteries were sold around the country between May 2007 and July 2008. Details: by phone at 866-945-2629; by Web at http://www.cobyusa.com or http://www.cpsc.gov.

The unit affected is the 10" Swivel Screen TF-DVD1020. Please contact Coby for a replacement. This is a voluntary recall by Coby and in no way is a reflection on the quality products that Coby offers.

I have called two times and left messages. I have a TFDVD1020 portable DVD Player DG240039D603000314

and when it was charging it exploded and melted the battery pack into the DVD player. When we tried to take it outside some of it fell on the floor and burnt the rug in my office and then some fell in the laundryroom on the carpet and burnt a spot on it.

Renee, as stated above for Ron with the same problem, we only post the recall information here to help inform consumers about safety issues and electronics. It does seem that you may have a serial # that is on the recall list and if you have no luck with Coby, either on their website or the 800#, you should contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission at the following links and explain your situation.

To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, call CPSC's hotline at (800) 638-2772 or CPSC's teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270, or visit CPSC's web site atwww.cpsc.gov/talk.html.

As a side note, we also have tried calling Coby and sending emails have yet to get a response from them. Be persistent and follow through with phone calls and emails. Also, contact the place of business where you purchased the unit. With any luck they may be able to help out. Be sure to photograph and document the DVD player, battery and other damage that may have occurred especially if you intend to send or return your unit somewhere.

In this case, we will try to contact them again on your behalf.

I just went to use my coby TF-1020 and the battery is split open. Battery # DG240143D702002535. What can I do to get it replaced?

Make sure that you photograph it and call the 800# above for Coby USA to get a replacement. Reports are that they are slow to respond so be diligent. If you filled out a registration card when you purchased the unit you should have received a notice from Coby as to what to do with the recall.
